Calculock is a carbon fiber clock housed in a beautiful aluminum frame. It features 132 light houses that indicate the hour, minute, and second. The clock is continuously changing, with the light houses turning on and off. To tell the time, the user simply counts the number of light houses. This unique design not only combines tradition and modernity but also creates a dynamic atmosphere in otherwise inactive spaces, enhancing the sense of pleasure in the passage of time.
The realization of Calculock involves the use of carbon fiber for its structure, an aluminum frame, and a digital board powered by a rechargeable battery. This combination of materials and technology makes the clock dynamic and attractive, providing users with a unique experience of time.
Technical specifications of Calculock include a 300mm x 300mm LCD screen with 132 light houses. The first column on the left indicates the 12 hours, the next five columns indicate the 60 minutes, and the last five columns indicate the 60 seconds.
Designed by Metanat Karami, Calculock offers an interactive and emotional experience. The turning on and off of the light houses creates a sense of movement and dynamism, transforming the atmosphere of any space. Its design allows for versatile use in various locations and by different users, providing a different sense of life and time.
The project for Calculock began in January 2017 in Tehran and was completed in March 2017. The design was based on research into Iranian traditional abacuses and their attractive performance. The main challenge was to harmonize form and function, combining tradition and modernity in a clock concept that would create interaction and positive emotions between the user and the product, while also developing a sense of pleasure in the passage of time.
Calculock has been recognized for its outstanding design and creativity. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2017. This award is bestowed upon designs that exhibit strong technical and creative skills, incorporating best practices in art, science, design, and technology. Calculock contributes to quality of life improvements, making the world a better place.
